The littlest among us can have a sweet Halloween treat for the spooky season, too. Sandra Mangamen's latest baby-and toddler board book,
Peek-a-Boooo! (Heart-felt Books) (Scholastic Press, 2019) begins with a question about what the tot can "be" for Halloween---a monkey? a honey bunny? an astronaut who flies in the sky?

Beginning with its soft and touchable die-cut Jack o' Lantern on the cover, this little toy-and-movable creation is both a book and a toy. Little ones can reach right through the cover, lift the soft felt flap on the facing page, and see, not just a bunny or a bee, but --themselves in the hidden mirror.  Based on the favorite interactive game of babies for millennia, this small book is a fine introduction to books and the holiday.

Boom Boom Boom! Christmas Parade by Sandra Boynton

BOOM biddy BOOM biddy BOOM BOOM BOOM!

WHAT'S THAT SOUND THAT FILLS THE ROOM?

We're in luck! It's a Christmas parade!  A little pig hurries to peer out the window and see the players go by with their instruments.

Marching at the head of the formation is Elephant on the bass drum, followed by chickens on bassoons, hippos on snares, ratta-tat-tatting. Next come two cows on saxophones and three mice on piccolos, tootling away, Sliding their slides over the heads of the mice are ducks on trombones. A Santa Claus Rhino rides royally by on his own special float, followed by none other than a bird blurping loud tuba notes.

And then, just as quickly as it came, the Christmas Parade is over! The little pig is  sad. Now what does he have to look forward to?

The red-and-while stocking just waiting to be hung on his bedpost should give him a clue about what to do on Christmas Eve, in the bright-new board book edition of her classic, Christmas Parade (Simon, 2012), complete with jolly hippo drummers marching by on the endpapers and filled with that irresistibly charming  Boynton rhymes and illustrations for the holiday season.

Deck the Halls: 10 Trim-the-Tree'ers--A Holiday Counting Book by Janet Schulman

Kids are counting the days to Christmas, and what better time to learn to count! The jolly kids from Janet Schulman's 10 Trick-or-Treaters are back just in time to reinforce those important counting skills in her brand-new board book 10 Trim-the-Tree'ers (Alfred A. Knopf, 2010).

The ten are togged in Christmasy costume--with halos, Rudolph antlers, or peppermint red caps--and they total up the ornaments as they trim their little tree. There are ten pretty presents under the tree, nine candles in the menorah on the mantle, eight candy canes to hang on the boughs, not to mention seven snowmen, six snowflakes, five reindeer, four Santas, three angels, two strings of bright colored lights, and of course, one golden star to top the tree.

What better ways to count down the days than with Schulman's little tree trimmers, who conclude by happily suiting up for the snow and head out to sing Christmas carols when their work is done. As in her previous seasonal counting books, Schulman provides an appendix where young children can practice their counting, and the youngest lap-sitters will have lots of fun finding and counting all the jolly ornaments on her well-trimmed tree.
