Rating Science Nonfiction and Science Fiction Books
If your kids are into space science and/or science fiction, author Marianne Dyson has a very useful website which rates science-related children's books for factual accuracy, clarity of explanations, terms, analogies, and concepts, currency of data, readability, and usefulness and accuracy of illustrations.
As she says
There IS gravity in space, the moon does NOT have a dark side, and Jupiter has at least 60 moons. However, kids today might not know these things because space and science fiction books are full of misleading explanations, incorrect terminology, impossible physics, old data, and confusing illustrations.
Science is a difficult area for the lay person to evaluate effectively. This website looks like a valuable tool for librarians, teachers, or parents. Check it out at http://www.mariannedyson.com/spacebooks.htm.
