Frills and Flowers! Annie and Snowball and the Magical House by Cynthia Rylant

At school Annie made a new friend.

One day Sarah invited Annie over to play.

And Annie can bring her bunny Snowball! Dad drives her over to Sarah's house. Annie is immediately blown away!
Sarah's house looked like a gingerbread house!

Sarah's house is a white-painted Victorian, with fancy gingerbread trim around the roof and along the porch, which is surrounded by flowers of all colors. There's a weather vane topped by an ornate whale. There's even a flower box at the upstairs window and a pink, flowering tree in the yard.

Sarah's mother greets them at the door and invites Annie and her dad inside to an equally frilly room, with flowery wallpaper, and with heart-shaped wreaths and bows, doilies, fringe, and doodads everywhere. There are even fresh frosted cookies with sprinkles for Annie's dad to take home!
Frilly things were Annie's favorite things!

Outside in the equally flowery backyard, with climbing ivy, roses, smiling angle statues, and even a spouting Cupid fountain, Sarah and Annie choose a huge blooming hosta as a perfect place to make a fairy house under its broad leaves and with a fairy table and plenty of rose petals. Snowball the bunny is happy to nibble the lavender. By the time the fairy tea is served, the girls' frilly dresses are a bit dirty and the two are very happy with their completed fairy house.

Back home with Dad, Annie has happy memories of her play date.

"It was magical," says Annie.

Annie the girly girl is in her glory in Cynthia Rylant's Annie and Snowball and the Magical House (7) (Aladdin Books/Simon and Schuster), in contrast to her usually more boisterous play times with her cousin Henry and his big dog Mudge.

  • I’m still in shock typing this. On February 16, 2025, my score suddenly crashed more than 190 points overnight from low-800s all the way down to 611 because of a bogus 90-day late on my federal student loans. The loans had been with Great Lakes, got transferred to Nelnet, and were paused during COVID. Somehow Nelnet never updated my address and kept mailing statements to an old place. I never saw them, never knew payments restarted, and boom reported 90 days late.
    I called Nelnet repeatedly, begged, explained the COVID pause mess and they basically said “not our problem, you should’ve updated your address.” Even my CFPB complaint came back denied. I thought I was screwed for years.

  • My husband and I are self-employed architects; we made most of our income from buying, renovating and selling houses in Virginia. In 2022 we had our first child. Lost income from clients who could no longer pay, plummeting real-estate values and a non-existent job market for architects left us with virtually no income for four years. We used our credit cards and savings, my 401k, sold our home at a huge loss, all with the idea that the market had to pick up soon and we would then be able to pay off our debts without filing for bankruptcy. We were terrified of bankruptcy because we depended on being able to get a mortgage to finance home purchases and renovations, our main source of income. In retrospect not filing was a mistake, the market never recovered in time for us and we accumulated a massive amount of credit card debt which we could not pay, somewhere around $50-60,000. Much of this has been charged off or we negotiated settlements; however we have two judgements, Amex for $1136 and Chase for $8566, which I tried to settle, and a Citibank account that was bought by Asset Acceptance, original balance of $16,166 now pumped up to $26,340.
