Baby Boos! Max's Halloween by Rosemary Wells

In Max's Halloween big sister Ruby, costumed as a prissy fairy princess, takes charge of the expedition, grimly pulling along Max, in the supporting role (natch!) of a dragon, to introduce him to the folkway of trick-or-treating.

To keep Max from eating the treats as fast as they are dropped in the pumpkin, Ruby commandeers their haul and leads the way to each door. As Ruby does the stage managing, feeding Max his lines, the homeowners dutifully drop gummy toads, grape grenades, and fruit bats into her container, while with a wink and a smile they slip the irresistible Max some extras to hide inside his costume.

Back home, Ruby takes charge of scrupulously dividing the swag. Taking his fair share to his room, Max gleefully pulls out his own private stash and has a proper Halloween feast.

Like the other board books in Wells' series, Max's Halloween shows a good-hearted, gung-ho toddler who manages to enjoy the whole holiday experience in a way all young kids can appreciate.

  • We read "something" Rosemary Wells almost every single day in my house. Right now my 3 year old is sick, sick, sick and all he wants to do is doze and watch Max and Ruby on DVD too. Today he gets this little treat! Shannon
